About the National Physical Therapy Exam (NPTE)

The national physical therapy exam (NPTE®) for PTs and PTAs is an important part of the licensing process.

Test Dates: The NPTE is administered by Prometric, a computer based testing company, on behalf of the FSBPT. The test is offered four times a year, typically in January, April, July, and October. Test dates for PTs and PTAs may differ, and test seekers must adhere to important registration dates and approval deadlines prior to receiving a seat reservation, so check with the FSBPT website well in advance of your intended exam date.

Eligibility: In order to be eligible to sit for the NPTE, candidates must first meet state and FSBPT (Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy) requirements. These requirements typically include:

  1. Education - Have a degree appropriate for the exam level from a CAPTE (Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education) accredited institution, or have an education that has been determined to be substantially equivalent by a recognized credentialing agency.
  2. State Board Approval - Have obtained approval by the state licensing authority (board) in the state or jurisdiction in which the candidate intends to be licensed.
  3. Security - Comply with any security requests made by FSBPT staff and have completed any sanctions related to any prior disciplinary action take by the FSBPT.
  4. Registration & Payment - Candidates must register and pay the registration fees by the deadline for the respective test date.

Licensing: Licensure is granted by the state licensing authority once the candidate has passed the NPTE, the state's Laws/Jurisprudence exam (as required), and all other state requirements.
